Editing Techniques

Whilst editing our music video using iMovie version 10.0.08, we used a variety of different editing tools to achieve our desired effect. Below are screenshots of a few of the main editing tools that we used.

We used the negative effect on a few of our shots to create a contrast between the  light and dark colours. For the screenshot below we had quick duration used to add flashes to the video and we split the other clips with a long duration.

We applied Andrew Goodwin theory of linking lyrics to visuals as we used a smokey overlay on top of the studio shot of the performer(looks like the room is filled with smoke).

Below we used the reverse tool to create confusion in our audience. This may also link to 'fever running through my bones' as one of our peers suggested to us that its similar to the effect of drawing blood.

In order for the viewer to see the protagonist more clearly we adjusted the colour and saturation and drawing out the natural light from the window which was reflecting off of the mirror.

Below is a screenshot of our timeline showing you how we created the fast paced sequences by changing the duration of each shot to about 0.6 seconds and split the 'crazy' studio shots using them as inserts. We made sure this all synchronised with the beat of the song.

This is a screenshot of how me managed to achieve the 'shimmering' effect by adjusting the saturation

To create consistency across our whole video we made the decision to use a black and white filter on every shot

Showcase Evening

So today we had a showcase at school where both AS and A2 showed their products to everyone including our family, peers and teachers. We introduced our video and gave everyone a bit of background on our video without giving too much away. After playing the video (which made our whole group feel very anxious) we gathered audience feedback which we recorded on our DSLR which will later be uploaded and posted on this blog. Overall after hearing the feedback it made us all feel very proud of what we have achieved with our video and are all happy with the final outcome. Go us!!

Title Screen

Mutually we decided to present our title in a similar way to existing media products that we have researched. In addition, we chose to have a logo as our font is the consistent across our video, digipak cover and magazine cover. Also the letters look like symbols which therefore looks more like a logo. We also chose to have our titles against a flashing establishing shot of a lightbulb,as we felt it made them more bold and static. We presented both titles on one screen for a duration of 3 seconds, as we believed it made the titles more clear and more professional looking.

Editing- flipping the shot

Today we decided to alternate between the shot below and the flipped version using the flip tool. we decided to do this to create lack of consistency to reflect her disorientation and inner struggle. Our shot also complies with the rule of thirds as it makes the shot more visually appealing and read the viewers eye in a different direction almost to confuse them and get to get the audience thinking. Also these shots reflect the two side her personality (inner battle with herself).

Digipak Cover

We have took this screen shot from our footage for our music video as we think it work excellently for our digipak cover, as it suits the conventions of other indie digipaks that we have analysed.

We like the idea of linking our digipak cover to our music video and have me appear in a circle as shown above.

Our First Draft

This is our first draft of our music video. As you can see there is still a lot of things we need to change and edit such as:
  • Fix the lip syncing issues
  • One circle size is bigger than the others
  • Trim the clip so you don't see me touch the door at 2:32/2:33
  • Insert the lightbulb clip in
  • Edit the fish eye clips so on each shot it appears on a different part of the screen
  • Insert artist and song name at the beginning
  • Let the circle shrink in rather than expand out
We are optimistic that we will get most of this done tomorrow, if not all of it so it will be ready for our deadline on Friday!

Filming Day 9: The big reveal!

So today we were filmed the final shots for the ending of the video where the hooded figure is revealed. We filmed in the small toilets in school where there was a large mirror for our shot. Here are some stills:

Filming Day 8

Our location for filming today was in our school. We managed to get a variety of shots especially for lip syncing as well as walking shots and a few other quirky shots. We wanted to get a large variety of shots as we have a lot of gaps to fill and we aim to not use too much of one location which we feel we have too much of the corner shot that we obtained on filming day 6. Here are a few stills from todays filming.

Filming Day 7- Back filming in the forest!

So today we were back filming in the forest, but this time a whole new concept to when we was last here filming for our old red riding hood idea! We filmed using a fish eye lens which only seemed to fit Hannah's iPhone 4s which we ended up having to film on. I lip synced the whole song and did a few other shots for variety. We also filmed another shot of me lip syncing from a side angle using the DSLR again to fill any gaps that we may have.

When we imported our fish eye footage we realised we should have been filming with the phone landscape instead of portrait as it caused the shots to appear like this below. However we hope to fix this through editing or if not we will go and re film.

Album Title

We have all settled on the album title 'Shadows' and we are now currently searching for a font. We searched the iMovie fonts but none of them have caught our eye, so we started looking online for fonts. We used the website dafont.com and found this font Symbolïzm by Lucas Moriceau
